Cellular Component Normal Response Changes in MS
Genes (hereditary component) Cell markers are present on the surface of all cells and are known as Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins. There are 6 specific markers commonly known as human leukocytic antigens (HLA’s). Class I antigens include HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C. Class II antigens include HLA-DP, HLA-DQ, and HLA-DR. These antigens allow immune cells to recognize and communicate with each other and determine which antigen an individual will respond to and how strong the response will be.(Goodman) The data for the strongest susceptibility implicates the genes on 6p21 chromosome in the MHC (human leukocyte antigen-HLA) which is thought to account for 10%-60% of the genetic risk.(Sospedra)(Hauser) The specific genes that provide the risk for MS are the HLA-DR and-DQ genes; the HLA-DR15 haplotype in caucasians (DRB1∗1501, DRB5∗0101, DQA1∗0102, DQB1∗0602).
